  • Picnic and sports day sunshine

Wed 27 Jun 2018 Debs Mansfield

The weather was fabulous, and our children strove for sports day glory on our field with their proud parents, grandparents and carers watching. KS2 on Tuesday and KS1 on Wednesday did their very best to compete in running races, ball throwing, javelin, tug of war, egg and spoon and welly wanging. Parents looked on, cheering and clapping, and encouraging their children to do their best.

The KS2 sports day was followed by a whole school picnic. Everyone sought shade and enjoyed some family time together, with the children making the most of the 16 acres of grounds. The selection of bright umbrellas and tents made such a cheerful show on the field!

FOTW sold ice creams and drinks to parents and carers, and then kindly gave every child an ice pop to cool them down after their exertions. Thank you FOTW.

And thank you to all the parents, grandparents and carers who came to cheer on the children, and who helped make such a wonderful cheerful atmosphere on this special day.

  • Taxi Day

Wed 13 Jun 2018 Debs Mansfield

A group of 8 year six children went to South Holmwood on Tuesday to take part in Taxi Day. For 70 years, taxi drivers in London have brought war veterans to Worthing for a day out and to break up their journey they have stopped in South Holmwood for tea, cakes, and sandwiches. One elderly gentleman said that he had been a child in the 40s, and remembers giving the veterans tea and cakes... and cigarettes! That's not something our year 6s were asked to do this time around!

The children mingled and mixed with the veterans and learned a lot about the war and what it was like to fight for your country. They asked about the veterans' medals, and were shown lots of photographs of when the veterans were 17 and 18.

Many people commented that the children were impeccably behaved, showed real interest, were very polite, and were confident enough to walk around the room and approach people with a smile. It was a delight to watch them talking and they were a credit to the school and to their parents.

This wonderful tradition is little known apart from in the immediate area, but it shows true selflessness and humanity. One veteran told me that he thinks it's wonderful that the taxi drivers give up a whole day, and that the people of South Holmwood and the local area bake cakes and make sandwiches both in the morning and for the return journey in the afternoon. I pointed out that his and the other veterans' sacrifices had been much, much greater.

  • Our Wonderful World Assembly

Wed 13 Jun 2018 Debs Mansfield

To wrap up the special curriculum week, 'Our Wonderful World'  with a bang, we had an assembly where each year group shared something they had learned. As you can see from the photos there was a varied mix of learning from rhymes, singing, dance, and foreign languages!

Reception St Paul bravely performed a carnival dance from Brazil with big smiles and happy feet.

Year 1, in big confident voices, told us all about the children in Ghana who have to walk to fetch water. They told us that they had tried to walk as far while carrying a heavy pack to see how it would feel.

Year 2 beautifully performed some nursery rhymes in Africaans and asked us to work out what they were.

Year 3 did a very skillful and energetic rendition of an Italian Tarantella which got everyone clapping along.

Year 4 executed the Chinese Dragon dance with skill, and played traditional Chinese instruments.

Year 5 line pleaded for us not to break their 'achy breaky hearts' while line dancing in their cowboy outfits.

And finally Year 6 did a highly polished version of 'Heads, shoulders knees and toes' in Japanese.

All the children were confident and performed wonderfully. Thank you children for practicing hard and giving us a wonderful assembly.

  • Our Wonderful World

Wed 13 Jun 2018 Debs Mansfield

Last week at school was a special curriculum focus called Our Wonderful World. Each year group was given a country to study and they took part in many activities throughout the week.

Reception St Paul studied Brazil, making carnival masks and learning a carnival dance.

Year 1 studied Ghana. They learned how a child may have to walk 4 miles to collect water, and they also tasted Kelewele (fried plantain) and jollof (spicy rice).

Year 2 learned about the South African Flag and learned how to sing nursery rhymes in Africaans.

Year 3 studied Italy. They learned a dance called the Tarantella and made their own pizza.

Year 4 learned all about China. They practiced a Dragon dance as well as making beautiful Chinese symbols and listening to lots of Chinese music.

Year 5 each had an American state to investigate. They tasted American food, drew American landmarks in art, and tasted food such as bagels, beef jerky and marshmallow cereal.

Year 6 studied Japan, learning how to sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Japanese, and also having a very relaxing Yoga session when they thought about Buddhism.

We hope your children told you all about their very exciting week!

  • The Greatest Showman Movie Night

Tue 05 Jun 2018 Debs Mansfield

The ‘SING’ school movie night organised by The Friends of the Weald and supported by the teachers was a huge success so we have decided to hold an evening screening of ‘The Greatest Showman’, which will be held in the school Hall on Friday 15th June at 8pm. Doors will open at 7.30pm

Entrance is £5 per person. There are limited places so early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. The film is rated PG so it is up to the parents/guardians to decide if this film is suitable for their children. FOTW accept no responsibility for this.

FOTW will not be offering refreshments on the evening but you are able to bring your own food and drink. Doors will open at 7.30pm, 30 minutes before the film starts so that you can check in (Please remember your tickets!) and get settled before the lights go down and the movie starts at 8pm.

A booking slip should be completed and returned to the school office, together with the total entrance fee by Friday 25th May. Booking forms are available in the school office.
